International reserves

The NBR's reserve assets, monthly since April 2005: foreign exchange reserves (securities and accounts), the reserve position at the IMF, SDRs and gold — 25 positions across five levels.

The identity reserves = foreign exchange + IMF position + SDRs + gold closes across all months, with a maximum deviation of 0.01. The tolerance is measured here, not inherited from the balance of payments, where it is 1: borrowed from there, it would have declared a precision a hundred times worse than the real one.

The quantity of gold has been practically unchanged since 2007 — 3.33 million ounces — while its value rose from 3,735 to 12,217 million euro between 2018 and 2025. Anyone getting only the value concludes that the NBR bought gold, so the aur block also gives the implied price in EUR/ounce: a division of two published series, exact, with no assumptions.

The unit sits on the position, not on the response — the quantity of gold is in ounces, the rest in million euro; a global unit would mix them into one column.

One position has the wrong name at source. REZL_VAL_CD_B_OUT_IN — by its code, the Romanian branches of foreign-headquartered banks — is named as if it sat under banks headquartered in Romania. The parent is taken from the code, and the position gets parinte_corectat: true. It is the only disagreement in the class; on the balance of payments the same check gives 192 of 192 agreement.

Nine of the 25 positions are permanently empty (REZL_XAR*, REZL_XVAL_D/L/F/G/X): they are part of the IMF template, but Romania reports nothing on them. They come back flagged se_publica: false, not silently omitted.

How it behaves

  • The reserve assets of the National Bank of Romania, monthly since April 2005 — 25 positions across five levels: foreign exchange reserves (securities and accounts), the reserve position at the IMF, SDRs and gold. In July 2026: 74,972.5 million euro.
  • The identity reserves = foreign exchange + IMF position + SDRs + gold closes across all months, with a maximum deviation of 0.01. The tolerance is measured here, not carried over from the balance of payments, where the real figure is 1: borrowed from there, it would have declared a precision a hundred times weaker than the data actually has.
  • The check runs over every month of the window, regardless of nivel_max. A filter on depth must not make the guarantee disappear.
  • The quantity of gold has been essentially unchanged since 2007 — 3.33 million ounces, varying only in the last decimal — while its value rose from 1,128 million euro in 2005 to 11,742 in July 2026. Anyone given only the value concludes that the NBR bought gold. So the aur block also carries the implied price: value divided by quantity, two published series, no estimates — 334 EUR/ounce in 2005, 3,524 in 2026.
  • The unit sits on the position, not on the response. The gold quantity is in ounces, everything else in millions of euro; a global unit would mix the two into a single column.
  • Nine of the 25 positions are permanently empty — REZL_XAR* and REZL_XVAL_D/L/F/G/X. No data is missing: the NBR publishes the full IMF template, and Romania reports nothing against them. They are returned flagged se_publica: false, so that anyone building the table from the template does not wonder whether the API lost them.
  • One position is misnamed at source. REZL_VAL_CD_B_OUT_IN — by its code, the Romanian branches of banks headquartered abroad — is named as though it belonged under banks headquartered in Romania. A series coded B_OUT_IN cannot sit under B_IN, so the parent is taken from the code and the position is marked parinte_corectat: true. It is the only disagreement in the class; the same check on the balance of payments agrees on 192 of 192 positions.
  • The whole history fits in a single request — there are 16 series with values, not 208 as in the balance of payments.
