Industrial producer price indices

The monthly series of industrial producer price indices — the index in the adjustment clauses of B2B supply contracts. Since January 2005, along two axes: the market (total, interna, externa) and the NACE level of detail (diviziune, 30 codes, or clasa, 177).

A fixed base, 2021 = 100, as at /cost-constructii and unlike /ipc: the adjustment between two months is the ratio of the indices, not their product.

piata=externa exists only at division level — the source publishes five matrices, not six.

⚠️ The classes are a subset, not a partition: 177 of the more than 600 NACE Rev. 2 classes, only where the source computes an index. A division is NOT the average of its published classes, and series from different levels do not combine.

Query parameters

NameTypeDescriptionAccepted values
piataoptional string | null Optional, total (default), interna or externa. The external market exists only at nivel=diviziune. totalinternaexterna
niveloptional string | null Optional: diviziune (30 codes plus the sections and groupings) or clasa (177). Without it, the level comes from the code: the class if it has an index, otherwise the division or section. diviziuneclasa
de_laoptional string | null Optional, YYYY-MM, from 2005-01. e.g. 2025-01e.g. 2024-06-15
pana_laoptional string | null Optional, YYYY-MM. e.g. 2025-06
caenoptional string | null Optional: any CAEN code — section (C), division (62), group, class (6201) — from any revision. It is brought to the class with an index (177, markets total and interna), otherwise the division or section (B–E) published for the chosen market; what was used is in meta.caen. e.g. 1011
caen_versiuneoptional string | null Optional: the revision of the caen code — 1, 2 or 3 — when its form is ambiguous (4932 means different things in Rev.2 and Rev.3). Without it, the code is looked up in the series revision first. 123
grupareoptional string | null Optional: the source aggregates that are not CAEN codes — total, bunuri_intermediare, bunuri_capital, bunuri_folosinta_indelungata, bunuri_uz_curent, energie (main industrial groupings). Not sent together with caen. totalbunuri_intermediarebunuri_capitalbunuri_folosinta_indelungatabunuri_uz_curentenergie

How it behaves

  • The monthly series of industrial producer price indices published by the Romanian statistics institute — from January 2005 to today, 258 months. Two axes: the market (total, interna, externa) and the CAEN level of detail (diviziune, 30 codes, or clasa, 177).
  • Fixed base, 2021 = 100 — verified on the total series of all three division-level matrices: the 2021 average comes out at 100.000 / 100.001 / 99.999. As with /cost-constructii and unlike /ipc, an adjustment between two months is the ratio of the indices, not their product. The ready-made coefficient: /calcul/indexare?indice=productie-industriala.
  • The 40 division-level series are three different things, and rol separates them: one industry total, four sectiune (CAEN sections) and five grupa_industriala (intermediate goods, capital goods, durables, non-durables, energy). The other 30 are CAEN divisions. Sections and main industrial groupings are two alternative cuts of the same economy — they do not add together and do not belong on the same chart.
  • At class level the CAEN code is in the response, extracted from the source label (1712 Fabricarea hartiei…) — 177 out of 177. That is what lets you pick the right index starting from a company's CAEN code.
  • ⚠️ The classes are a SUBSET, not a partition. CAEN Rev.2 has over 600 classes; the source publishes an index for 177, only where it computes one. The measured consequence: "the division sits between its published classes" holds in 6,270 of 6,402 month×division pairs (97.9%) — but fails 132 times, with gaps up to 14 points where coverage is thin (CAEN 30 has 2 published classes out of 8). That is why it is not declared as a check: it would report an error on correct data. The division is not the average of the published classes, and series from different levels do not combine.
  • piata=externa exists only at division level and has 31 series instead of 40. The gaps are economic, not missing data: electricity, water, coal and oil extraction, printing and tobacco are not exported.
  • How much the code matters: from January 2020 to June 2026 the total industry index rises 85.6%, metallurgy 60.4%, and paper and cardboard manufacturing (class 1712) 17.9% — all on the total market (on the domestic market, class 1712 rises only 11.5%). A contract indexed on total industry instead of its own class can land several times wide.
  • Activity is requested the same way across the platform. caen takes any CAEN code, at any level and from any revision, and the route brings it to what the series publishes — climbing to a parent or translating it through the official INS correspondence; meta.caen states the requested code, the one used and whether it was climbed or converted. grupare is for the source aggregates that are not CAEN codes.

What it is for

  • Adjusting a supply contract on the supplier's own activity index.
  • Restating a materials estimate at producer prices.
  • Comparing factory-gate inflation with shelf inflation.

Response structure

FieldTypeDescription
data.piata string
data.nivel string Level in the classification hierarchy — the deeper, the more detailed.
data.de_la string Start of the interval the response covers.
data.pana_la string End of the interval the response covers, inclusive.
data.baza string The index base — 2021 = 100, fixed.
data.tip_indice string baza_fixa: it determines how any adjustment must be computed.
data.unitate string The unit of the values. Read it before plotting or adding them up.
data.filtre array The filters actually applied, as the route understood them — useful when a value was normalised.
data.luni array Number of months covered.
data.serii[].caen null The series' CAEN code, always a string ("05", "24", "C", "1011") — the letter for sections, null only for the total and the main industrial groupings, which have no code.
data.serii[].eticheta string Display label for the value — the readable version of the code next to it.
data.serii[].rol string total, sectiune, grupa_industriala, diviziune or clasa. The three kinds of aggregate sit on different axes.
data.serii[].luni_publicate integer How many months the source actually published.
data.serii[].valori object The values of the series, by period.
meta.sursa string The official source the data comes from, with its licence where one is required.
meta.acoperire.de_la string The first period we have data for.
meta.acoperire.pana_la string The last period we have data for.
meta.luni integer Number of months covered.
meta.serii_publicate integer
meta.serii_returnate integer How many series were actually returned, after filters and the cell ceiling.
meta.nota_baza string What the index base is and when it changes.
meta.nota_metoda string A note on how to read the response: a caveat, a convention or a limit of the source.
meta.nota_roluri string A note on how to read the response: a caveat, a convention or a limit of the source.
meta.nota_subset string A note on how to read the response: a caveat, a convention or a limit of the source.
meta.nota_externa string A note on how to read the response: a caveat, a convention or a limit of the source.
meta.fara_date data is null and this says why. The projection over the INS data is empty. As on the other series.
meta.fara_date_cod The short, STABLE word for the reason, for clients that branch on it in code: fara_date is prose and may be rephrased, this is not.
meta.caen object How the caen parameter was understood: the requested code, the revision it was read in and the code the route used. For a list of codes, one object per code.
meta.caen.cerut string The CAEN code sent, normalised (upper case, no dots).
meta.caen.versiune_cerut string The revision the code sent was read in: the one in caen_versiune, otherwise the first it exists in.
meta.caen.folosit string The code the series used: the requested one, its first published parent or the source aggregate that contains it (02-03).
meta.caen.nivel string The level of the code used — on company routes, of the requested code: sectiune, subsectiune, diviziune, grupa, clasa or agregat.
meta.caen.denumire string The name of the code, from the CAEN nomenclature.
meta.caen.versiune_serie string The CAEN revision the series is published in.
meta.caen.conversie boolean true when the code was translated from one revision to another through the official INS correspondence.
meta.caen.urcat boolean true when the series does not publish the requested code and a higher level was used.

Error codes

CodeSlugWhen it occurs
401neautentificatToken missing, invalid, expired or revoked.
403feature_indisponibilThe current plan does not include the feature the route depends on.
404caen_nepublicatNeither the code nor its parents are published in the series; detalii.disponibile lists the keys. grupare_nepublicata — the grouping is not in the series; the response lists them.
422caen_inexistentThe code in caen exists in no CAEN revision; it is a bad FILTER value, hence 422, not 404. A market or level outside the list, a month written other than YYYY-MM, or interval_prea_lung beyond 300 months. caen and grupare sent together, caen_versiune without caen, or a code that is not CAEN-shaped. combinatie_indisponibila — the external market is not published at class level; the response lists the available markets.
429cota_depasitaThe plan's monthly quota has been exceeded (see Retry-After).

All errors share the same shape. eroare.cod is stable and is the value you should branch on in code — not the text in mesaj, which may change.
