Average gross and net earnings

The monthly series of average earnings — levels in lei, not indices, so they compare directly. Gross or net, monthly or hourly, by NACE activity, since January 2000.

Net is below gross in all 23,052 pairs, in both revisions, without exception. The net/gross ratio tells the story by itself: 76.5% in 2000, 72.5% in 2010 and 60.0% from 2018 onwards, when the contributions moved to the employee.

⚠️ A classification break, measured. NACE Rev. 2 stops in 2025-12, Rev. 3 begins in 2025-01. Over the twelve overlapping months, the economy total is identical, both gross and net; but at activity level, of 492 pairs 458 fall below 0.5% and 34 exceed it, with a maximum of 1.38%. The route does not splice the two revisions: it serves one and says which, where it ends and how comparable they are.

⚠️ The seasonally adjusted series exists only for hourly earnings; the monthly one is published gross only.

How it behaves

  • The monthly average earnings series published by the Romanian statistics institute — from January 2000, gross or net, monthly or hourly, by CAEN activity. The monthly series has 312 months, the hourly one 204 (from 2009).
  • These are LEVELS in lei, not indices. They have no base and compare directly, and the ratio of two months is itself the growth coefficient. That is why /calcul/indexare?indice=castig-salarial needs neither a base nor a chain — unlike /ipc, /cost-constructii, /preturi-productie and /cost-forta-munca.
  • Net is below gross in all 23,052 pairs, in both revisions, without a single exception. The ratio tells the story by itself: 76.5% in 2000, 72.5% in 2010 and 60.0% from 2018 onward, when contributions moved to the employee. Updating an obligation on gross or on net yields different coefficients, and the difference is not small.
  • ⚠️ A classification break, measured on the overlap. CAEN Rev.2 stops in 2025-12, Rev.3 starts in 2025-01 — twelve common months. The economy total is identical in all 12, gross and net. But at activity level, of 492 comparable pairs 458 fall below 0.5% and 34 exceed, up to 1.38% (chemicals, division 20, in November 2025). The headline series splices cleanly across the break; the sectors do not.
  • The route does not splice the two revisions. It serves one — the one requested via versiune, or the one that fits the window — and says which. If the requested interval runs past it, the response carries trunchiat with the month it stopped at, instead of silently filling in from the other.
  • The CAEN code is in the response, in four shapes: total, a section letter, a two-digit division, and a range of merged divisions (02-03, 62-63 in Rev.2, 05-39 in Rev.3). The forma_cod field says which, so levels do not get mixed. Rev.3 is finer: 102 activities against 68.
  • The seasonally adjusted series exists only for hourly earnings — the monthly one is published raw only. An ajustare=zile_si_sezonier with unitate=lunar gets a 404 with the explanation, not an empty series.
  • How differently the economy pays, gross monthly in December 2025: total 9,868 lei, construction 8,890, IT and communications (62-63) 21,201 lei.
  • Activity is requested the same way across the platform. caen takes any CAEN code, at any level and from any revision, and the route brings it to what the series publishes — climbing to a parent or translating it through the official INS correspondence; meta.caen states the requested code, the one used and whether it was climbed or converted. grupare is for the source aggregates that are not CAEN codes.

  • Updating maintenance payments or income-linked damages.
  • Comparing a sector's pay against the economy average.
  • Reconstructing the wage level of a given month for a dispute.

data.trunchiat Present only when the requested interval runs past the served revision: it says where the response stopped.
meta.fara_date data is null and this says why. The projection over the INS data is empty. As on the other series.
meta.fara_date_cod The short, STABLE word for the reason, for clients that branch on it in code: fara_date is prose and may be rephrased, this is not.
meta.caen object How the caen parameter was understood: the requested code, the revision it was read in and the code the route used. For a list of codes, one object per code.
meta.caen.cerut string The CAEN code sent, normalised (upper case, no dots).
meta.caen.versiune_cerut string The revision the code sent was read in: the one in caen_versiune, otherwise the first it exists in.
meta.caen.folosit string The code the series used: the requested one, its first published parent or the source aggregate that contains it (02-03).
