How it behaves

  • The counts are recorded events, not events that occurred. The catalogue has 1 event in the 10th century and over 33,000 in the 21st — the difference is instrumentation, not seismicity. Below magnitude 3 it only becomes complete from the 1980s, with the modern seismic network. Do not compare counts across eras.
  • The per-decade series illustrates exactly that trap: do not read it as rising seismicity. What rises is detection capability.
  • The nedeterminata band appears for both magnitude and depth, and is not an error: the source genuinely did not determine the value for those events.
  • The filters narrow the population over which all three aggregates are computed at once.

What it is for

  • Illustrate the distribution of earthquakes by depth and magnitude in an article or report.
  • Show the rise in recorded events as the seismic network densified.
  • Size an analysis before extracting the full series.
